  • was a sailor all of his life starting as a fisherman and oyster dredger in Tollesbury progressing to ferries of the Great Eastern Railway running from Harwich to the Hook of Holland. Recollecting what my father Herman Robert Wilkinson said - Edward served as an officer on the 'SS Berlin'. He was transferred from that boat to another, of which I believe he was Captain. Shortly after this the 'SS Berlin' sunk off the Hook. After retiring from these ferries he moved to Ipswich and took a part time job as Captain of the 'Suffolk or Essex' a paddle steamer ferry service running between Ipswich, Harwich & Felixstowe. During this period he also had a barge, the 'Sea Gypsy' which was moored at Waldringfield on the River Deben. Though he died when I was only 4 years old I can remember sailing on this barge. My mother, father and sister Jean would wait on the beach opposite the Fludgers Inn at Felixstowe, granddad would anchor off Cobbold Point, and collect us in his tender, which was a fairly substantial rowing boat
